The Halvening Rocket

Posted on May 11, 2020May 21, 2020

The Halvening Rocket is a 6ft tall wooden rocketship effigy that was built to burn on or around the official Bitcoin “Halvening” event. The burning of the rocketship also represents humanities persistence through strange times (just as Bitcoin too has persisted), as well as a celebration of the changing of seasons in the northern hemisphere.

The rocket, inspired by the Halvening, was conceptualized over the course of a week and then physically built over one uncannily warm spring weekend in early May 2020. The form comes from differing sized octagonal rings made from 2×4 scrapwood stacked vertically in the shape of a rocketship. The body rested on supporting fins to hold it up. The wood was sourced from a small local sawmill.

  • Step one; start with a pile of scrap 2×4’s.
  • The ring in the top right of the picture was the original concept with 21 sides (representing 21 million bitcoin) instead of 8.

The burn was livestreamed on both Twitch and Zoom, with participants attending remotely from their homes. The fire safety team was asked to wear masks and gloves while onsite in consideration of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Screencaps of the video streams were sent to the artists after the event from all over the world:

The livestream of the entire burn is archived on our Twitch channel here.

A video replay of the collapse happening can be found here.

You can still join the official Halvening Rocket Telegram group here.
